Sorry guys but l have neglected to update you all here. After recovering from flu which actually took about 6 weeks, I BROKE my right wrist!! Yes, I AM right handed..... so once again PlayDATES have to take a back seat. Please hope, pray and keep everything crossed for me that this is the END of my spate of bad luck. Meanwhile please do browse back through the 25 PlayDATES already published here and take the opportunity to catch up on any you might have missed. I do plan on continuing once recovered but it could take a while longer than the year I had planned on......

Week TWENTY SIX - artist DOWN!!

I have been sick with the flu for the whole of the week and lost voice on day two. It's winter here in Australia and just about everyone is coughing and sneezing. It's a particularly nasty flu this year, so we are being told, with a racking cough that can hang on for weeks. So, dear PlayDATERS, there is no PlayDATE this week and not sure how long it will be before I recover enough to play again. Upside is that I am spending a lot of time catching up on other's classes, surfing the web and reading...............

Week TWENTY FOUR - marbling resources

Week TWO - Overpainting a magazine image or photograph

Welcome back to week TWO. How did your week ONE go? Did you try it? Well, whether you did or not, please enjoy this weeks offering of repainting a magazine image. This process will also work over photographs if you first seal them with a spray fixative or other sealer. It's in two parts as it was too long for only one upload.

I only used pastel pencils because my image was so small. Soft pastel sticks will work in the same way.





NOTE: I did reinforce her eyelashes, nostrils and centre line of mouth with pen at the final step but forgot to tell you.

So this week is a simple collage technique I use for blending elements together into a whole. It can be as simple or complicated as you want it to be and it is one I use often. If you have pastels, I strongly suggest you use them here as you will LOVE the way they interact with the gesso, both before and after. If using before, it tints the gesso and afterwards blends smoothly into soft edges. As mentioned in the video, if you are concerned about them rubbing off, you can *fix* them with spray fixitive or just normal old hairspray. I will be using pastels quite a bit, so you might want to get some if you don't have any already. Cheaper brands are fine and if you find a great bargain, please SHARE the info here!



I used similar blending techniques on the piece shown below while encorporating hand painting and layering to give more depth. I have used parts of prints of my own artwork to collage on here too. Think about doing that as you can paint it once and use it again and again AND AGAIN.......

This blog is dedicated to an ART DATE every week and I will be posting a mixed media/art journaling snippet each week for 2012. A new background, technique, idea or prompt........ perhaps a step by step, maybe a video, maybe a link or two to something cool. An adventure in mixed media and a learning experience for us all, me included. I always learn more from others as I teach. So thank you everyone for being MY teacher.

So, you have now entered my play area, where there are no rules except to play NICE and treat others as you wish to be treated. Here you will find I publish a new mixed media/art journal adventure every week of 2012. You can participate or just watch. Your choice. However if you choose to participate, then please leave somewhere we can visit you and see your work relating to this project. If you don't have a blog, website or somewhere else we can visit, then you might like to consider setting up a personal online gallery just for this purpose.
